BREAKING NEWS: Santa Clara Politico Chris Stampolis' Dirty Laundry Gets a Public Airing
By Carolyn Schuk Santa Clara politico Chris Stampolis is in the media spotlight this week, but not because of his role as a super-delegate to the Democratic national convention. It's because the gossip blog-zine TMZ got hold of a 2005 recording of a 911 call about an incident in which the 42 year-old Stampolis is alleged to have physically and verbally assaulted Click Here for Complete Story
Downtown: Why Theres No There, There
With the success of the historic areas like Campbells downtown strip and the faux downtown of Santana Row, many regret that Santa Clara has no similar draw. Click Here for Complete Story

Putting the "There" Back: Downtown Revitalization
The idea of "downtown" is an essential part of our sense of community. We're drawn to "downtown" whether it's a true downtown like Palo Alto's University Avenue or a "Main Street, Disneyland" like Santana Row. Click Here for Complete Story
Downtown Redevelopment Plan on Hold
A plan to restore an urban center to Santa Clara will stay on hold at least until mid-summer as potential developers wait for the uncertain credit and real estate markets to stabilize.
One of the two companies invited to bid on the project declined to participate. The other, while remaining enthusiastic, says that current economic conditions make it impossible at this time to develop accurate financial projections for the projects by the RFP deadline. These projections are necessary for construction loans as well as providing the project's budget. Click Here for Complete Story
Community Support for a Long Time Tradition
By Larry Sacks
Almost hidden in Franklin Mall is a store front not quite like any other. Amidst the restaurants, bar, boutique, dry cleaner, and watch repair shop sits a public display rarely seen anymore. The home of KKUP, 91.5, a truly local FM radio station. KKUP, for those that have never heard of it, is the true definition of listener supported radio.
Community Minded
KKUP is and has been known as the "people's radio." Dont confuse that definition as anything dealing with late night college dorm room discussions, as KKUPs purpose is to provide views, music, and cultural diversity not found in mainstream media. We feature local musicians, activists, poets and story-tellers both on tape and live in-studio! You name it! If you can't hear it anywhere else, it's probably on KKUP.
Marathons, Marathons, Marathons
Being a Community Minded or more aptly, Community Supported Radio Station means the station can stay in business and keep doing what it does so well by hosting events where the listening audience can meet the voices behind the microphones. The station does this through their marathons, and with 14 marathons scheduled in 2008 alone, theres ample opportunity to either tune-in for a good listen or to come down to Franklin Mall to see real-life and real live radio.
One Marathon took place over the weekend of August 15-17. It was KKUPs 2nd Annual Oldies Marathon that ran from noontime on Friday, August 15 through midnight on August 17. The weekend included Live Hawaiian music on Saturday with an oldies car show (any cars older than 1972 were allowed to enter) on Sunday, August 17.

SCPAL Tees It Up
TBirdies, bogies and mulligans along with plenty of laughter, smiles and fun was the scene last week at the 31st annual Santa Clara PAL (police Activities League) golf tournament at the Santa Clara Golf & Tennis Club as local philanthropic community members were teeing it up to raise much-needed funds for SC PAL.
With 125 players competing, all dreaming of sinking a hole-in-one and winning a brand new Porsche, its no surprise that over 100 Silicon Valley community members came together supporting SC PAL. With odds heavily stacked against the players, its also not surprising that no one mustered the nearly impossible feat of sinking the hole-in-one.
However, as the event does each and every year, a large amount of proceeds were raised for SC PAL, the non-profit youth arm of the Santa Clara Police Department. Click Here for Complete Story

Signs Tech Solutions Grand Opening
Not many business owners have to worry about offending anyone at their opening, but for the owners of Signs Tech Solutions, located on the edge of Santa Clara and Sunnyvale, came the question: Do we have our grand opening as a new Sunnyvale Business or a Santa Clara business?
Answer: Both!
So it went that on Friday, August 18th, husband and wife team Myriam Brenes and Luis Lopez had one grand opening party with two official ribbon cuttings. It was lucky that the invitation for Cupertino got lost in the mail, as a third ribbon cutting may have been a crowd.Click Here for Complete Story

Local Pizzeria Owner Knocks on Doors to Help Hit-and-Run Victims' Families
When Oralia Puga-Ramirez and Enedina Oliva were killed in August's fatal hit-and-run on Stevens Creek, not only were their families faced with the sudden loss of a beloved mother and grandmother. They were also suddenly faced with another unanticipated hardship: the price tag of a funeral today.
So when Kirk Vartan, owner of Slice of New York pizzeria on Stevens Creek, read in the paper that Puga-Ramirez and Oliva's families were having difficulty meeting the expenses of a proper funeral and burial, he felt "compelled" to do something especially because the accident happened so close to the restaurant.Click Here for Complete Story

One Person's Junk is Anothers Treasure
Whether you were looking to complete your set of Richard Nixon inkwells or to fulfill your quota of obligatory work-related Christmas presents at a discounted price--dont worry, we wont tell--then the Santa Clara Garage Sale was the place to be.
Once a year, this publicized event helps folks empty out their garages and storage sheds in order to make space and a few dollars while theyre at it. The flip side of this, of course, are the buyers who go away with these same items to take up space in their garages and storage sheds and may be the ones advertising a garage sale next year. Santa Clara Entrepreneur Rides the Waves of Tech Change
Santa Clara-based NetClime wants you to be your own Webmaster. Its on-demand SiteKreator (www.sitekreator.com) system provides one-stop shopping for your website from registering your URL, to designing and building the site.
SiteKreator is the latest brainchild of Sophia, Bulgaria native and technology seer Ivaylo Lenkov, who got his first taste of computer programming as an eighth grader. By high school, he was programming industrial robots to assemble hard drives and, later on, writing software for weather satellites some of which are likely still in orbit.
Barely out of college when the Soviet bloc collapsed in 1991, Lenkov started NetClime the same year. Since then, he's never looked back, leading the company through more than one reinvention as changing markets wiped out once-lucrative businesses and evolving technology created new ones.
