Brian P. Lowery Chairperson of the Citizen’s Advisory Committee kicked off his campaign for City Council in a gathering of about 50 supporters on August 22 at the home of Teresa O’Neill, Planning Commission member.
“Thank you for showing up. I think we can all learn something here tonight,” said O’Neill. “The opposition is well funded and organized but this is an election we really must win.”
Karen Hardy former Planning Commission member introduced Lowery, a candidate for City Council Seat number 6.
“I’m excited that Brian has decided to make a difference in Santa Clara,” Hardy said, “at a time when there are important issues on the table such as the 49ers stadium. These aren’t glamorous things we need to deal with. But guess what? We need to be grown ups and remember what’s in the best interest of the people who put us here.”
Lowery, vice president of the Izumo Sister Cities organization and a business owner since 1989, holds a Masters in Engineering from SCU and believes that his background would be an asset to the City Council.
“Engineering teaches you to channel your energy and problem-solve,” he said.
In 2006, Lowery ran for City Council’s number 5 Seat but lost to school principal and associate school superintendent Joe Kornder. This go-round he’s pitted against City administrator, Jamie Matthews.
“I will not betray the public’s trust,” Lowery continued. “I can see both sides of an issue and seek out priorities. But I can’t win on my own will. I need your support.”
According to Lowery, he brings important qualifications to Santa Clara government, including his experience as a successful business owner and world traveler.
“I have made many business contacts with companies that operate within our city,” he said. “It’s important that a Council member be a person who can draw from a business background because commerce is the necessary ingredient to the vitality of our city.”
Lowery also said that he is “open to the diversity of cultures that exist here in Santa Clara.”
“I can speak,” he continued, “to the people of Santa Clara in the languages of Spanish, French and Japanese. And this is important. There is a certain rapport that exists between a council member who has the capacity to speak to a citizen in his or her own native language.”
According to campaign literature, included in the top 10 reasons to elect Lowery is his support for: bicycle friendly lanes, development of the downtown area, Senior Citizens and a balanced budget.
Also present was Mary Emerson, candidate for City Council Seat number 3 and 19-year Santa Clara homeowner, who is up against incumbent William Kennedy and businessman Mario Bouza.
