49ers Focus

The 49ers opened the 2011 season far from where they left off in 2010 with a 33-17 win over reigning NFC West champions Seattle on Sunday, September 11 at Candlestick Park.
Clinging to a 19-17 lead after allowing 10 unanswered points to open the third quarter, Ted Ginn, Jr. sparked the 49ers with a 102-yard kickoff return, followed soon thereafter by a 55-yard punt return for a TD. Ginn’s performance guised the 49ers dismal third quarter play, in which the team gained a mere 10 yards on offense.
In addition to Ginm’s explosiveness, there were several positive aspects of the 49ers win, including QB Alex Smith showing veteran poise and confidence, going 15-for-20 for 124 yards and a rushing TD. The 49ers Defense looked amazing, forcing three turnovers (two fumbles, one INT), compiling five sacks, and holding Seattle on almost every drive, allowing only 64 rushing yards. The O-Line held strong, not allowing a single sack.
Though the 49ers picked up the win, there are kinks in the armor of the Jim Harbaugh-led 49ers. The team was just 1-of-12 on third down, and amassed only 85 yards rushing, and just barely over 200 yards-from-scrimmage in all. Another stat that needs some help - nine penalties for 102 yards. The 49ers were also dismal in the red zone, settling for four field goals that could have been turned in TDs.
If Smith continues playing well, and Harbaugh adjusts, as expected, the 49ers are capable of going 10-6 and claiming the NFC West championship. Harbaugh appears to be bringing prestige back to the fabled 49ers franchise. Here’s hoping!
