Santa Clara Bruins Steam Roll Los Altos Friday. The Santa Clara Bruins rolled over the reigning Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino division champion Los Altos Eagles 40-7 on September 9 at Bruins Field in non-league competition. Senior RB Raymond Remo and Junior RB Adrian Gutierrez each had 1-yard TD runs in the first half, putting the Bruins up 14-7 at halftime. The offensive attack got rolling in the second half quickly when Sophomore Adam Garza returned a kickoff 80 yards for a TD in the third quarter and added an 11-yard rushing TD on the Bruins’ ensuing possession. Senior QB Jason Plater added a 28-yard TD run in the fourth, while Senior DB Kingsley Okakpu returned an INT 96 yards for a TD in the fourth to cap the Bruins’ scoring. Junior Justin Duerksen connected on 4-of-5 PATs. The Bruins (1-1) host Del Mar (0-2) on Friday, September 16 at Bruins Field at 7 p.m. in a non-league game.

Wilcox Chargers Crushed by Terra Nova. The Chargers’ 42-8 loss at Fitzpatrick Field on September 9 moved them to 0-2 on the year, both losses being non-league games. Head Coach Dan Brown has shifted away from the Chargers’ notorious veer rushing attack that the Chargers have become well-known for. The Chargers have a bye week then play cross-town rival Santa Clara in non-league competition on September 23 at Bruins Field.

Santa Clara University Men’s Soccer Wins Two. SCU played two matches over the weekend and won both topping Nebraska-Omaha 4-0 and Cleveland State 2-0. Four different players scored in the Nebraska-Omaha game Friday, September 9. Freshman Glenn Vass started the scorefest in the 16th minute. Junior Erik Hurtado scored in the 18th followed by sophomore Carlos Montes 38 seconds later. Senior Eric Masch scored in the 59th minute to give the Broncos their fourth and final goal of the night. Against Cleveland State, it was two second-half goals that gave the Broncos the edge. The first was by senior Mykell Bates and the second was an unassisted goal by Hurtado.

Santa Clara University Women’s Soccer Ties Twice. After two overtimes, the score remained 1-1 against UC Irvine at the Stanford-Nike Invitational on September 9. SCU freshman Cate Parchinski scored the lone goal for SCU. Likewise, on Sunday, September 11, SCU had a 1-1 draw with Notre Dame after two overtime periods. Sophomore Sarah Jackson scored with an assist from junior Allie Vernon in the first period. SCU senior goalkeeper Bianca Henninger made eight saves during the match.

Santa Clara University Men’s Water Polo Loses One, Wins Four at Princeton Tournament. After losing the opening game 9-6 to Princeton, the Broncos beat St. Francis 11-10, Brown 6-5, MIT 8-6 and Fordham 13-8 over the past weekend. Against Princeton senior Marcus Akerland led the offense with two goals followed by sophomore Tucker Carlson, sophomore David Guibord, redshirt freshman Matt Kochalko and redshirt sophomore Jack Penner with one goal apiece. Senior goalie Michael Wishart made 11 saves in the loss. Against St. Francis, senior James Case led the offense with three goals followed by redshirt senior Daley Meistrell with two, and redshirt sophomore Theo Nasser, freshaman Kyle Surber junior Patrick Weiss, Akerland, and Gibord with one goal each. Wishart had 10 saves and two assists in the win. In the Broncos second win of the tournament, redshirt sophomore Jimmy Moore scored twice followed by Guibord, Nasser, Case and Weiss with one tally on the scoreboard. During day two of the tournament, Weiss scored three times followed by Penner, Akerland, Gibord, Kochalko, and Meistrell with one each in the victory over MIT and in the final game Akerland, Kochalko, Nasser, Suber and Weiss all scored twice followed by freshman Mark Davis, Meistrell and Moore with one.

Santa Clara University Women’s Volleyball Loses Twice at Santa Clara Tournament. SCU suffered 3-1 losses against both UC Santa Barbara and North Dakota September 9-10. SCU received a team-high 12 kills from junior Kaleigh Durket. Juniors Kayla Lommori and Dana Knudsen finished with nine kills each and senior Bridget O’Hara picked up 20 digs in the loss to UCSB. SCU redshirt sophomore Katherine Douglas had 23 kills and 15 digs in the loss to North Dakota.

Bronco Basketball Takes Canadian Trip. Santa Clara University men’s basketball played three games in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada to help prepare for the 2011-2012 season. In the first of the three games, SCU played Trinity Western and lost 108-100 in overtime despite junior Kevin Foster knocking down five threes and scoring 23 points. The Broncos took on University of British Columbia in the second game of the trip where they lost an overtime battle 98-85. After erasing a 16-point lead, the Broncos came up short even though both Foster and junior Raymond Cowels III scored 14 points each and as a team SCU collected 50 rebounds. In yet another overtime match up, the Broncos were victorious over University of Fraser Valley 87-84. The Broncos were led by freshman Brandon Clark and sophomore John McArthur who each scored 16 points.

Trasolini Suffers Season-Ending Injury. Santa Clara University senior Marc Trasolini has been declared out for the season after suffering an ACL tear in his left knee during the first two minutes of a Bronco exhibition game in Trasolini’s hometown of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Hurtado WCC Player of the Week Santa Clara University junior forward Erik Hurtado has been named the men’s soccer “Player of the Week” for September 12, 2011. Hurtado has helped the Broncos to their first place 3-1-1 start by scoring twice over the weekend against Nebraska-Omaha and Cleveland State.

Santa Clara Native Carlos Hernandez Helps Sacramento Rivercats (Oakland A’s Affiliate) to Second Round of Playoffs. Hernandez, a crafty southpaw from Santa Clara, pitched nearly six strong innings on September 10, allowing only six hits, two runs, two walks and striking out four while picking up his first Triple A playoff victory against the Reno Aces (Arizona Diamondbacks affiliate). The Rivercats now advance to Round 2 of the Pacific Coast League playoffs against the Omaha Storm Chasers (Kansas City Royals affiliate). Hernandez pitched two games during the 2008-2009 California League playoffs, striking out top MLB prospect Buster Posey on three straight pitches (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LaSvDpPPsA4) en route to helping the Stockton Ports win the 2008-2009 championship.
