Chargers Overcome Early Season Jitters to Tie Los Gatos 20-20, Wildcats Win Overtime Period For Tie-Breaking Purposes
The Chargers matched Los Gatos play-for-play, opening SCVAL De Anza division play by tying Los Gatos 20-20 on September 30.

Senior QB Andrew Aguilar connected with Sophomore RB Delshawn Mitchell on a 6-yard fourth-and-goal play to tie the game at 20 as the fourth quarter winded down.
The teams played an OT period for tie-breaking purposes, of which the Chargers scored a TD first, but missed the extra point, as Chargers Junior kicker Christian Topete was injured earlier while making a tackle. The Wildcats claimed the OT win when RB Garrett Zeiter, the CCS’ leading rusher crossed the goal line for the fourth time in the game to give Los Gatos the OT win after connecting on the PAT to win 27-26.

The Wildcats were the first to score in regulation when Zeiter put Los Gatos up early 7-0 on a 4-yard TD run and a PAT. Aguilar scored on a 6-yard run to tie the game at 7 after the PAT. Junior Roland Luke put the Chargers in the lead 14-7 after breaking free on a 30-yard TD run. Zeiter scored on an 11-yard run tying the game at 14.

After the half, Zeiter brought the Wildcats back to the lead 20-14 with a failed conversion. The Aguilar-to-Mitchell play tied knotted the game at 20 as the Chargers failed on the PAT attempt. The Chargers had a field goal attempt blocked by the Wildcats as well. Senior Tala Brown and Junior Sefa Mikaio each recorded a sack for the Chargers while Senior Ryann King had an INT and Sophomore Justin Wright recovered a fumble.

The Chargers (1-2-1, 0-0-1 league) play at reigning state champion Palo Alto on October 7. The Vikings (3-1, 1-0 league) are coming off of a 29-13 win over Homestead.

Santa Clara Rolls Over Cupertino 35-0
The Bruins made a bold statement in opening SCVAL El Camino division play on September 29 at Cupertino in Sunnyvale, shutting out the Pioneers 35-0. The Bruins scored 28 points in the second quarter and never looked back. Senior Ray Remo opened the scoring in the second quarter, crossing the goal line on 1-yard and 32-yard TD runs. Sophomore Adam Garza followed with a 4-yard TD run, with Junior Adrian Gutierrez capping the first half scoring with a 4-yard run. Senior Justin Murillo concluded the scoring with 2-yard TD run midway through the third. Junior Justin Duerksen was 5-for-5 on PATs. Senior QB Jason Plater was 4-for-5 passing for 41 yards with completions to Remo and Senior Kingsley Okakpu. The Bruins combined for 276 yards rushing with ten players having carries. Remo and Murillo both compiled 52 yards while Gutierrez added 50 yards. Junior Jason Aguirre led the Defense with five tackles with Junior Dion Perry adding four tackles. Garza also added an INT on Defense. The shutout was the Bruins’ second of the season.

The Bruins (3-2, 1-0 league) play at Harker (2-3, 0-1) on October 7, who are coming off a 47-6 loss to Gunn. Led by second-year coach Mark Krail, the Bruins look to be on their way to their first league title since 2005.

Santa Clara University Men’s Soccer Picks Up Two Home Victories by Beating Portland and Gonzaga. Senior Brandon Zimmerman scored in the first half for the Broncos in the September 30 match against Portland. Portland was unable to equalize in the first West Coast Conference match of the year. The win gave the Broncos a 5-1-3 overall record and 1-0 record in WCC play going into the Sunday, October 2 match up against Gonzaga. A first half goal by freshman Glenn Vass and a second half goal by junior Erik Hurtado gave the Broncos a 2-0 victory over Gonzaga. The Broncos are now 2-0 in WCC play.

Santa Clara University Women’s Soccer Picks Up Victories Over Nevada 3-0 on September 29 and San Diego State 5-0 on October 2. The Broncos picked up three early goals in the first half of the match against Nevada and carried the three-goal lead through the end of the match. Sophomore Julie Johnston started off the scoring in the fourth minute followed by a pair of goals by junior Meleana Shim (ninth and 11th minutes). The Broncos put on a show at home against SDSU, with freshman Sophia Huerta pulling off a hat trick (goals in the eighth, 64th and 65th minutes). Freshman Cate Parchinski and Johnston also scored in the 5-0 win. The Broncos are now 7-1-4 this season.

Sporting 97B Green are NHB Champions & Manteca Champion Cup Finalists. Over the weekend of September 24-25, Sporting 97B played in the prestigious Champions Cup in Manteca. The tournament featured many of the top teams in Northern California. In group play, they tied AR Zorros 2-2, defeated San Juan Lightning 2-0, then defeated the host Stockton Monarcas Aztec Warriors (No. 2 ranked team in Nor Cal) 1-0 to advance to the semis, where they defeated the Stockton Storm (No. 1 ranked team in Nor Cal) 2-1. In the finals, they had a rematch with the Aztec Warriors, losing 1-3.

Sporting ‘00G Green Crowned Ajax United Champions. The Santa Clara Sporting ‘00 Girls Green Team won the Ajax United tournament in Ripon last weekend, scoring 18 goals opposed to five allowed goals to bring home the championship after enduring intense Central Valley heat. The girls played a solid four games with numerous players scoring and assisting on goals.  Sporting opened the tournament with a 6-1 victory over the Ajax United Premier 01 team, then defeated the Ajax United 02 team with 6-2. On Sunday, they beat the Ceres Earthquakes team 4-0 to earn a spot in the championship game, then won the Final 5-0 over COSC 00GR.

Santa Clara University Men’s Water Polo Loses 3, Wins 1 at SoCal Tournament. The Broncos suffered 16-8 and 11-10 losses to Cal and Loyola Marymount on Saturday, October 1. The scoring was pretty even with redshirt sophomore Theo Nasser, senior Brett Zylstra, senior James Case and sophomore Tucker Carlson all picking up two goals against Cal. In the narrow loss to LMU, Nasser led the scoring with four followed by senior Marcus Akerland and junior Patrick Weiss with two each, and redshirt senior Daley Meistrell and Case with one apiece. Senior goalie Michael Wishart made 18 saves over the two games. After losing to Air Force 12-10 in their first game on Sunday, October 2, the Broncos bounced back by beating Pomona-Pitzer 14-5 in the final game of the tournament. Against Air Force, the scoring was led by Case with three, Nasser with two, and junior CJ D’Arienzo, Meistrell, Akerland, Weiss and freshman Kyle Surber with one each. In the 14-5 victory, Weiss and Meistrell led the offense with three goals apiece followed by Zylstra and sophomore David Guibord with two each and D’Arienzo, Case, Surber and freshman Mark Davis with one each. Wishart made 19 saves over the two games and backup goalie junior John Nash made two saves in the Pamona-Pitzer game.

Santa Clara University Women’s Volleyball Picks Up Wins at Portland and Gonzaga. After losing to San Diego on September, 24, the Broncos had two decisive 3-1 victories over both Portland and Gonzaga. Against Portland, junior Kaleigh Durkett led the team with 11 kills followed by freshman Taylor Milton with 10 kills and eight digs. As a team, the Broncos collected 57 kills, hit .302, dug the ball 61 times, scored on three aces, picked up seven team blocks and had 52 assists. Against Gonzaga, the team hit .201 with 68 kills while collecting 63 assits, 80 digs, four team blocks and two aces. Individually, redshirt sophomore Katherine Douglas led the team with 16 kills and 10 digs followed by Milton and junior Kayla Lommori with 11 kills and Durket and senior Tayna Schmidt with 10 kills each.

Wilcox Girls Golf Team Improves to 3-1, Ohe Medals Again. Wilcox defeated Sobrato 330-366 at Santa Clara Golf & Tennis Club and fell to Monta Vista 230-321 at Deep Cliff. Kathy Ohe was the gold medalist in the match vs. Sobrato, shooting a 42.

Santa Clara University Men’s Golf Finishes 6th at Kikkor Classic, Women Finish 5th at Monarch Dunes. Sophomore Bobby Monaco and senior Cory Mehl were the only top 20 finishers for the Broncos, finishing 16th and 19th. On the women’s side, sophomore Taylor Camany was the only top 10 finisher for the Broncos, shooting a 233 over three rounds.

Santa Clara University Women’s Cross Country Finishes 2nd at Charles Bowles Invitational. Freshman Mary Kriege and junior Mary Reynolds finished first for the Broncos with a time of 18:17.
