Bruins Cruise to 56-28 Win Over Harker. The Bruins (4-2, 2-0) continued stellar play in SCVAL El Camino division, trouncing the Harker Eagles (2-4, 0-2) on October 7 at Harker.

Sophomore Adam Garza opened the scoring with 10-yard and 1-yard TD runs in the first quarter, putting the Bruins up 14-0 early. Harker scored their lone first half points early in the second quarter on a 20-yard TD pass play. Garza then scored on a 22-yard run, followed by a two-yard run by Senior Ray Remo, 5-yard run by Junior Adrian Gutierrez and Garza’s fourth TD, a 70-yard TD run, steamrolling the Bruins to a 42-6 halftime lead.

The Bruins scored midway in the third on a 21-yard run by Senior Richard Lacap with the Eagles then scoring on a 44-yard pass play. Junior Justin Murillo scored the Bruins’ final points on an 8-yard TD run in the third. The Eagles added a TD midway through the fourth, and also scored a TD as time expired.

Junior Kicker Justin Duerksen was 7-for-7 on PAT attempts while Senior Raymond Martinez added a PAT. Garza amassed 141 yards rushing and four TDs on six carries as the Bruins compiled 353 yards rushing. Remo added 73 yards rushing, Lacap recorded 63 yards and Gutierrez recorded 54 yards rushing. Senior QB Jason Plater was 2-for-2 for 29 yards, both completions to Senior Kingsley Okakpu.

The Bruins host Gunn (1-3, 1-0) on October 7.

Wilcox Defeated 42-13 by Defending State Champion Palo Alto Vikings The Chargers (1-3-1, 0-1-1) could not stop the Vikings (4-1, 2-0) in the SCVAL De Anza league battle on October 7.

Though the Chargers took the lead early on a 60-yard TD pass from Senior QB Andrew Aguilar to Senior Keenan Gates, the host Vikings set sail, soaring to a 35-7 halftime lead over the Chargers, scoring 35 unanswered points.

The Vikings’ B.J. Boyd scored three times in the first half (80-yard kickoff return, receptions of 36 and 48 yards) to help the Vikings roll over the Chargers.

The Chargers added a late TD on a 40-yard pass play from Aguilar to Junior Mo Iese, however it was too little, too late, as the Vikings had already done their damage.

Chargers’ Junior RB Roland Luke amassed 109 yards on 11 carries. Aguilar was 12-for-20 for 211 yards and two TDs and an INT. Senior Corbin Jackson led the Chargers with seven tackles while Senior Mosa Likio added six tackles. Seniors Tala Brown and Martin Ankovic added five tackles each. Sophomore Sione Longani Finefeuiaki blocked a punt. The Vikings overpowered the Chargers, sacking Aguilar five times.

The Chargers host Milpitas (4-1, 1-1) on October 14.

Santa Clara University Men’s Soccer Picks Up Two Straight Losses. In a home match against USF on October 5, SCU fell 2-0 and in an away game against Saint Mary’s on October 7, the Broncos lost 2-0.

Santa Clara University Women’s Soccer Snags OT Win Over St. Mary’s. Freshman Sophia Huerta, who was coming off a hat trick, picked up two goals to give the Broncos the 2-1 victory. Huerta’s first goal game in the 55th minute when she found the back of the net with a 23-yard strike. Huerta’s goal put the Broncos equal to a goal scored by St. Mary’s in the 47th. Huerta’s second goal game with three minutes remaining in the first overtime period. Huerta intercepted a pass from the Gaels’ keeper and scored to give the Broncos the win.

Santa Clara University Women’s Volleyball Loses Twice. The Broncos lost to BYU 3-0 on October 6 and 3-1 to USF on October 8. Junior Dana Knudsen led the offense against BYU with eight kills followed by senior Tanya Schmidt with seven. Junior Alexandra Palmer had 16 assists and Sophomore Alyssa Anderson picked up 14. Against USF, the Broncos were led by redshirt sophomore Katherine Douglas with 14 kills and 11 digs followed by Knudsen and Junior Kaleigh Durket with 11 kills apiece. Senior Bridget O’Hara dug 16 times and Palmer picked up 28 assists while Anderson set the ball for 24 kills.

Santa Clara University Men’s Water Polo, Loses One, Wins One. On October 8, the Broncos suffered a 12-6 loss to Pepperdine, but followed it with a 9-6 victory over UC Davis on October 9. Against Pepperdine, goals were scored by redshirt sophomore Theo Nasser (2), senior Marcus Akerland, redshirt sophomore Jimmy Moore, senior James Case and junior Patrick Weiss. In the 9-6 win, there was a three-way tie for the offensive leader between Akerland, Nasser and senior Brett Zylstra. Each Bronco scored twice while sophomore David Guibord, Moore and Case scored once.

Santa Clara University Cross Country Places Fifth and Sixth. SCU participated in the Gator Invite on October 7. The men’s team placed sixth and the women’s team placed fifth. The women were led by junior Hayley Ney who placed 14th by running a 23:14 while the men were led by freshman Tony Ferrari who placed 23rd and ran a personal best of 26:03.

Santa Clara University Men’s Golf Takes Fourteenth Place. The Broncos played in the Wolf Pack Classic on October 3rd and 4th and placed 12th out of the 14 participating teams. Sophomore Scott Lowe was the best finisher for Santa Clara. Lowe placed 40th by shooting a 229 (73, 78, 78).

Santa Clara University Women’s Golf Finishes in Fifth Place. SCU placed fifth out of the seven teams who participated in the Firestone Grill Invitational on October 2nd and 3rd. Sophomore Taylor Carmany was the highest finishing Bronco, placing ninth and shooting a 233 (77, 80, 76).
