Bruins Continue El Camino Championship Quest With Win Over Matadors. The Bruins (6-2, 4-0) defeated the Matadors (4-2, 2-0) 46-20 on October 21 at Bruins Stadium, firmly giving them control of the SCVAL El Camino Division title, which could be their first league title since 2005.
Though the Matadors scored first and went up 6-0, the Bruins then went on a scoring frenzy in the second quarter, scoring three TDs to give the Bruins a 19-6 halftime lead.
Senior Rey Remo scored on two 1-yard runs while Senior QB Jason Plater connected on a 50-yard pass to Kingsley Okakpu.
Sophomore Adam Garza continued added the points as he scored on a 95-yard kickoff return to open the second half, putting the Bruins in control 25-6.
Sophomore Edwin Munguia scored on a 1-yard TD to put the Bruins up 32-6.
The Matadors scored once in the third and fourth, but the Bruins also added two TDs in the fourth, an 8-yard run by Senior Justin Murillo and a 1-yard run by Junior Freddy Lopez, giving the Bruins the 46-20 triumph over the visiting Matadors.
Junior Justin Duerkesen was 4-for-6 on PATs.
Garza led the Bruins with 131 yards rushing. Junior Jason Aguirre led the Bruins Defense with nine tackles.
Junior Ben Dominguez and Senior Richard LaCap both recorded INTs while Dion Perry blocked a field goal.
The Bruins play at Fremont on October 28 and host Lynbrook on November 4 to conclude league play.
Chargers Get Back on Track With Win at Los Altos. The Chargers (2-4-1, 1-2-1) got back on the winning track, by dominating the Eagles (1-6, 0-4) 55-0 on October 21 in Los Altos.
The Chargers marched to an early 28-0 lead in the first quarter, with TD runs of 7 yards by Junior Roland Luke, 35 and 36 yard runs by Sophomore Delshawn Mitchell and a 35-yard pass from Senior Andrew Aguilar to Senior Keenan Gates.
The Chargers added another three TDs in the second quarter, with a 5-yard run by Aguilar, 35-yard pass from Aguilar to Senior Kevin Fletcher and a 19-yard run by Luke.
Gates added another TD in the third quarter on a 95-yard kickoff return.
Senior Robert Cueno was 7-for-8 on PATs.
Mitchell led the Chagers rushing attack with 152 yards on seven carries. Luke added 122 yards. Aguilar was 5-for-5 for 159 yards passing.
The Chargers Defense played strong, amassing four INTs and two three recoveries in the shutout victory. Senior Mosa Likio led the Chargers’ Defense with 10 tackles.
Wilcox hosts Homestead (5-2, 2-2) on October 28 at Fitzparick Field.
Santa Clara University Women’s Soccer Wins Twice. The Broncos picked up a 2-1 victory in Portland on Friday, October 21 followed by a 4-1 win over Gonzaga on Sunday, October 23.
Against Portland, sophomore Julie Johnston put SCU on the board in the fifth minute when she headed a pass from senior Margueritte Aozasa into the net. Senior Bridgett Miller picked up the winner in the 85th minute when she shot to the left side of the net and the ball slipped past Portland’s goalie.
Against Gonzaga, junior Meleana Shim got the Broncos up early when she scored her third goal off the season in the fourth minute. Miller added a second goal in the 23rd and freshman Cate Parchinski tallied a third late in the first half to put the Broncos up 3-1 at halftime.
Junior Allie Vernon notched SCU’s fourth and final goal in the 51st. The Broncos are now 4-0-1 in WCC play and host Pepperdine Friday, October 28 at 5 p.m.
Santa Clara University Women’s Volleyball Wins Twice. The Broncos were victorious over Loyola Marymount 3-0 on Thursday, October 20 and University of San Francisco 3-1 on Saturday, October 22. In the straight-set win, SCU was led by junior Kayla Lommori with 14 kills. Junior Kaleigh Durket and junior Dana Knudsen both scored 10 kills and Alyssa Anderson had 44 assists in the win.
In the win over USF, Knudsen led the offense with 16 kills followed by sophomore Megan Anders with 10 kills, two solo blocks and four block assists. Redshirt sophomore Katherine Douglas and Lommori each had 12 kills and senior Bridget O’Hara had a match-high 24 digs. The Broncos next host BYU Saturday, October 29 at 1 p.m.
Santa Clara University Men’s Water Polo Loses One, Wins Four at Home Event. After dropping the first game 10-4 to Brown, the Broncos had an 11-6 win over Air Force, 11-10 win over Cal Baptist, 13-6 win over Bucknell and 13-4 win over Harvard at Santa Clara’s own The Rodeo Tournament.
In the loss to Brown, senior Markus Akerland, senior James Case, sophomore Tucker Carlson and freshman Mark Davis each scored once. Redshirt sophomore Theo Nasser led the scoring against Air Force, picking up five goals in the victory. Redshirt senior Daley Meistrell, senior Brett Zylstra, reshirt freshman Matt Kochalko, redshirt sophomore Jimmy Moore, Case and Carlson also scored.
In the victory over Cal Baptist Akerland and Weiss were the offensive leaders with three goals apiece, followed by Zylstra and Case with two each and Meistrell with one.
On the final day of the tournament, sophomore David Guibord led the team against Bucknell with three goals followed by Akerland, Carlson and Davis with two apiece and Nasser, Moore, Case and Weiss with one goal each.
In the final game against Harvard, senior goalie Michael Wishart set the all-time Santa Clara record for goalkeeper blocks. Case picked up three goals to lead the team offensively followed by Meistrell, Akerland and Weiss with two apiece and Davis, Moore, Kochalko and junior CJ D’Arienzo with one each.
The Broncos will next host Pacific Sunday, October 30 at noon.
Santa Clara University Men’s Crew Wins Opener. SCU’s men’s crew team began its 2011-12 season by winning the Wine Country Classic on Sunday, October 23. Led by senior captain Daniel Calvillo, the Broncos picked up a decisive win in the 5K event over Sonoma State and Sacramento State. The team will compete at Head of the American Regatta in Sacramento on October 29.
Santa Clara University Men’s Tennis Play in Round of 16 at ITA Regionals. Senior Kyle Dandan and sophomore John Lamble made it to the singles round of 16 at the Seattle, Washington event this past weekend. Dandan fell to fourth-seeded Nick Andrews of Cal 3-6, 7-5, 6-7 (10-8). Lamble also fell, in the same round, to second-seeded Kyle McMorrow of Washington. The sophomore lost 6-4, 1-6, 3-6. The duo of junior Tom Pham and Dandan lost to a pair from Stanford in the round of 16 9-7. SCU will next play in the Gael Classic October 28-30.
