Bruins Inching Closer to First League Title in Six Years. The Bruins came roaring into Sunnyvale with the hopes of continuing their SCVAL El Camino division dominance. And they did, dominating the Fremont Firebirds 28-0, the Bruins’ third shutout of the season and fifth consecutive victory.
Sophomore Adam Garza led the Bruins’ offense, scoring three TDs on runs of 37, 29 and 1 yards, while Junior Adrian Gutierrez added the final TD, a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Junior Justin Duerksen was 2-for-3 on PATs while Senior Rey Remo scored on a run conversion.
Junior Jason Aguirre led the Bruins with 15 tackles. Senior Brent Richofsky and Junior Jurgen Lagos each recorded a sack. Remo and Junior Patrick McCaffrey each recovered a fumble.
The Bruins (7-2, 5-0) have almost clinched the SCVAL El Camino division crown, as they defeated Monta Vista (5-3, 3-1) who sits second in the division, tied with the Lynbrook Vikings (5-3, 3-1) who the Bruins host in their final regular season game at Bruins Stadium on November 4. If the Bruins defeat the Vikings, they will be undefeated in division play and claim the El Camino crown.
The Bruins have outscored their opponents 280 to 121 points, including dominating league opponents 192 to 54.
Even with a loss, the Bruins will remain atop the El Camino division. The only way the Bruins will not claim a share of the title is if they lose to Lynbrook and Lynbrook wins their remaining two games. Lynbrook is coming off of two consecutive wins, most recently a 28-7 win over Harker.
Chargers Falter in Battle With Homestead. The Chargers were heading into this battle with the Mustangs with a win-or-go-home attitude, as the Chargers greatly need to win their remaining games to qualify for a CCS playoff berth, having fallen to the bottom of the De Anza division standings.
The Chargers, however, fell flat, getting pummeled 35-10 by Homestead (6-2, 3-2).
The Chargers (2-5-1, 1-3-1) were trailing 21-10 at halftime, and Homestead added a TD in both the third and fourth quarters to escalate the Mustangs over the host Chargers at Fitzpatrick Field.
The Chargers scored on an 11-yard TD run Senior Andrew Aguilar with the PAT by Senior Robert Cueno. Aguilar also added a field goal.
The Chargers play at Mountain View (5-3, 3-2) on November 4. The Spartans are coming off of a 46-14 loss to Palo Alto.
