49ers Focus

Though the score (19-11) doesn’t indicate otherwise, the 49ers were fine-tuned in all aspects of the game on Sunday, dominating the Skins early, stretching to a 13-0 lead in the second quarter. Defense, special teams and offense all contributed, however, there are still a few bugs in the 49ers arsenal.

The 49ers failed to capitalize on several opportunities, with several dropped balls by receivers. Some questionable penalties hurt the 49ers as well. The 49ers were an anemic 3-for-12 on third down, most of the failed conversions coming in the second half.

QB Alex Smith connected with rookie FB Bruce Miller for a TD and David Akers kicked four field goals, including his fourth 50-plus yard field goal on the season. Smith was, once again, efficient and poised under center, going 17-for-24 for 200 yards and a TD. Combine Smith’s poise and Akers’ accuracy, plus Frank Gore’s fifth straight 100-yard game (107 yards on 19 carries), the 49ers are a well-oiled unit with tremendous upside, not completely seen yet. Smith connected to eight different receivers on the day.

The 49ers’ Defense forced three turnovers and did not allow a TD until the waning moments of the game when they were leading 19-3. The Defense once again shut down the run offense, allowing only 52 yards rushing on the day. The 49ers have not allowed a rushing TD all year. The 49ers also shut down the Skins on fourth down, holding the Skins twice on fourth down.

Though the 49ers have shut down opponents, they will need to step up down the stretch, with tough games coming against the Giants, Ravens and Steelers. As predicted in pre-season, the 49ers (7-1, leading the NFC West by an amazing five games) will cruise to the NFC West title. The question to tackle now is can the 49ers make a surge deep into the playoffs, and perhaps even a Super Bowl berth?
