With their win in St. Louis on Sunday, the 49ers (13-3) clinched the No. 2 seed in the NFC playoffs as well as a first round playoff bye.

Despite controlling the game and cruising to a 21-point lead with just over two minutes remaining in the game, the 49ers still have a few gremlins to work out before they can march into the Super Bowl.

Though the 49ers improved on third down slightly (6-for-16) and vastly improved in red zone efficiency (3-for-4, 2-for-2 goal-to-go), the 49ers allowed the Rams (2-14) to nearly make a thrilling fourth-quarter comeback.

But the 49ers Defense held strong in closing the game, and wins are wins. The Defense compiled two INTS, three sacks and several big defensive plays in the win. But it was the offense putting up 34 points that surprised many.

QB Alex Smith once again played efficiently, throwing for 219 yards, surpassing 3,000 yards on the season while going 21-for-31. On the season, Smith has a 3.4TD to INT ratio, ranking him third in 49ers franchise history, behind only Steve Young. Smith threw only five INTS on the year.

The 49ers Defense ranks first in the NFL in a number of categories and should be a formidable test for anything that may come their way. With their powerhouse Defense that’s almost unstoppable against the run, and an ever-improving aerial game, plus a ground-and-pound rushing attack and absolutely stellar Special teams play, the 49ers have the tools to make waves and earn a Super Bowl berth.

Head Coach Jim Harbaugh and the entire 49ers’ coaching staff has positioned the 49ers well heading into the playoffs. Now, it’s time for the talented cast of players to go out and perform in the 49ers divisional playoff game on Saturday, January 14.
