SC Bruins Girls Basketball
The Bruins defeated Sobrato 60-20 on December 27 to open the Dons Club Holiday Tournament at Del Mar High. Senior Jessi Boyd scored 30 points. The Bruins then fell to Gunderson 50-47 on December 28 in the tournament. Boyd scored 20 while Senior Victoria Chavez added nine points. The Bruins are now 6-4 on the season. The Bruins open their league schedule hosting Cupertino on January 6 (6:15 p.m.) in their first home game of the season in their newly revamped gymnasium.

Wilcox Chargers Girls Basketball Keeps on Rolling; Claim Tournament Championship
The Chargers defeated Santa Teresa 46-25 on December 27 in the Dons Club Holiday Tournament at Del Mar High School. Sophomore Joeseta Fatuesi led the Chargers with 19 points and Sophomore Caitlin Brown added 10 points. The Chargers then defeated Leigh 61-36 on December 29 in the tournament’s second round. Fatuesi scored 25 points while S. Ratliff added 12 points with Cook and Brown each adding eight. The Chargers (10-0) continued rolling, defeating Westmont 52-41 to win the championship on December 31. The Chargers open league play against Mountain View, after press time on January 3. The Chargers then travel to play Gunn on January 6.

Santa Clara University Women’s Basketball Falls to Pepperdine. Despite a 22 point lead at halftime, Pepperdine roared back into the game with a 19-4 run to open the second half. The Broncos couldn’t keep up with the Waves and fell 62-56 on New Year’s Eve. Senior Alyssa Shoji led the Broncos in the first half with 12 points, while redshirt junior Lindsay Leo led the team overall with 14. Shoji is currently leading all of NCAA Division I players in three-point shooting (54 this season) and is currently second (within four) of all-time three-pointers in the SCU record books. The Broncos next play University of Portland at home on Thursday, January 5 at 7 p.m.

SC Bruins Boys Basketball Keeps Momentum Moving
The Bruins improved to 10-1 by defeating San Lorenzo Valley 95-71 on December 27.
Junior R.J. Pamintuan led the Bruins with 20 points. Senior Brandon Loredo scored 15, Sophomore Ronaq Virdi and Senior Cole Yamamura 11 a piece, Junior Tayyab Khan 10, Senior Kingsley Okakpu and Sophomore Cole Lockwood eight each and Senior Brandon Ngo five. The Bruins host their league opener, and first game in their newly revamped gym on January 6 (7:45 p.m.) against cross-town rival Wilcox.

Wilcox Boys Basketball Suffers Three Losses in Monta Vista Holiday Classic
The Chargers (5-6) were defeated 62-55 by Harker in the Monta Vista Holiday Classic on December 30. Martinez led the Chargers with 19 points with Senior Jalen Narciso and Senior Andrew Aguilar adding 11 each. The Chargers also lost to Tennyson 42-26 on December 29 and to Half Moon Bay 44-43 on December 28.

Santa Clara University Basketball Beats Eastern Michigan, Falls to Wagner in Cable Car Classic. The 45th Cable Car Classic was played at Santa Clara University December 29-30. The Broncos had their first game against Eastern Michigan where they held the Eagles scoreless for a nine-minute stretch in the first half and came up with a 75-55 victory. Junior Kevin Foster led the Broncos with 25 points and junior Niyi Harrison added a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. As a team, the Broncos shot 52.2% and went 8 of 18 from three-point range. The team collected 39 rebounds, 15 assists, four steals and one block.

After beating Eastern Michigan, Santa Clara University played Wagner in the Cable Car Classic finals. Wagner came back from being down by 15 at the five minute mark, but the Broncos couldn’t hold on for the win and lost 64-62. Foster led the team with 20 points followed by sophomore Evan Roquemore with 17. As a team, SCU shot 39.2% from the field and collected 35 rebounds, nine assists, three steals and three blocks. The Broncos will next play at the University of Portland on Thursday, January 5. The game is set to be broadcast on Comcast California.

Bruins Wrestler Miguel Horta Places 8th in the 2011 Bash Wrestling Tournament
Senior Miguel Horta claimed eighth place in the 138-pound weight class at the 2011 BASH Tournament Dan Olson Memorial Duals in LeMoore on December 29-30. Horta won his first two bouts by pin and a 4-3 decision before falling in the championship quarterfinals. Horta was then defeated in the seventh place, placing eighth in the very tough tournament.
