A New Miss Santa Clara Is Crowned

On the evening of Jan.7th, an enthusiastic audience gathered to see eight accomplished ladies of Santa Clara perform in the annual Miss Santa Clara Scholarship Competition held at the Mission City Center for Performing Arts. Stephanie Quintal, executive director of the Miss Santa Clara Auxiliary, thanked the city for its support and mentioned that each participant in the competition receives a form of scholarship.

The winner of this year’s Miss Santa Clara competition is Caitlin Hoemmelmeyer. She also won awards for her interview, evening wear, and community service. Currently a pre-K teacher, Hoemmelmeyer’s scholarship would be useful in helping her pursue her teaching credentials and her studies in Child Development at San Jose State University.

"There were a lot of really amazing girls tonight," says Hoemmelmeyer in an ocean blue evening dress with a sparkling jeweled strap. "I competed in Miss Santa Clara six times. I kept coming back every year and I finally got my turn! I’ve learned about confidence and so many things about myself through this program that made me the woman I am today. I also want to thank my family, my friends, and my boyfriend."

For the talent segment, Hoemmelmeyer performed an energetic hip-shaking Tahitian dance in a feathered ensemble with a matching headdress.

"I have family in Hawaii who inspired me to learn Tahitian dance," she says.

A New Miss Santa Clara’s Outstanding Teen is Crowned

The afternoon of Jan. 7 started off with a graceful song that echoed throughout the Mission City Center for Performing Arts. Melissa Bowling, Miss Santa Clara’s Outstanding Teen 2008 and Miss Santa Clara 2010, sang the National Anthem and opened up the annual Miss Santa Clara’s Outstanding Teen Scholarship Competition. Each contestant received scholarship money for their participation.

Many highlights marked the lively afternoon. Chaes Kufis gave an upbeat tumbling performance. Mia Stevens tap danced in a fluorescent pink flapper dance costume. Cathy Vu played a romantic serenade on the violin. Alexis Chavez showed some hip moves in a tap dance number. Hannah Villalpando sang with expression from Christina Aguilera’s "Beautiful."

This Week's Letters

The recent outcry over the political, closed door dealings concerning the 49er stadium have caused some in the pro camp to call those apposed, whiners, nimbies, wackos, etc. The name callers seem to have missed the entire point of what a free election / vote is.

While opposed to the stadium, most of us have accepted the terms of the vote and the will of the majority. Those who still try to stop the stadium have sought legal recourse.

I, for one cannot accept the dirty politics that goes on in Washington and big cities. It makes me wonder what was going on in Santa Clara prior to this mess.

What truly sickens me is the fact that there is a portion of the citizenry that is not only willing to accept the circumventing of a vote, but embraces it. I am not calling for a dismissal of the 2010 vote. I am calling for the enforcement of it. If the citizens of Santa Clara are to take on a $900 million debt, then put it to a vote.

I am not a whiner, a nimbey, nor a wacko. I am a citizen of this city, and the U.S.A, and I insist on my representatives doing the right thing.

Ralph Alvarado

Stadium opponents seem to want to drain Santa Clara's resources.  Despite a unanimous vote by the City Council (7-0) to approve funding for the 49er stadium, they want to waste City funds and try to get the vote recalled.  This despite the fact that two councilmembers, Jamie McLeod and Will Kennedy - who opposed Measure J - voted in favor of the funding because they know the 49ers are ultimately responsible for the repayment of the loans.  The stadium opponents want to fight the City which will put additional drain on City budgets like the library, Senior Center, police and fire departments.  Services that we all rely on.  Santa Clarans voted for the Stadium to stimulate economic growth, provide jobs and funds to help put Santa Clara in good financial shape.  Santa Clara will never get an opportunity like this again.  The 49er franchise is ultimately responsible for the repayment of the loan.  It is not going to come from the City General Fund nor new taxes as promised by Measure J.  Don't let the naysayers bring doom and gloom on the City - the siss-bam-boom of cheerleaders sounds much better!

Unfortunately I do not live in Santa Clara but work close enough to know what is going on with this city and I am absolutely against the idea of putting a stadium next to Great America theme park. I do not see any sense to building another stadium that could draw unwanted traffic, crime and violence amongst fans which could cause danger to the public. I believe the 49ers are perfectly fine at Candlestick park.

Thank you for your time.

We have lived in the city of Santa Clara for forty years or more. We are registered voters. My wife and I have signed the petition to have a re-vote on the stadium issue. We do not believe the mayor and council are telling us the whole truth and are putting our city in a long term debt. We think the mayor and the gang of five councilmen should be recalled. They continue to represent the 49er organization and not the best interest of the city of Santa Clara.

Santa Clara vs. Marijuana Part 1

Santa Clara vs. Marijuana Part 1

Municipalities have long been playing tug-of-war with medical marijuana dispensaries, with several Cities having adopted ordinances prohibiting medical marijuana facilities.

Santa Clara has been fighting it’s own battle against medical marijuana dispensaries, quarreling with Angel’s Care Collective, a medical marijuana dispensary located on Laurelwood Avenue regarding use permits and zoning issues since 2009.

"Angel's Care does not have a use permit for its operations," says Deputy City Manager Carol McCarthy. McCarthy states Angel’s Care has a business license, but is operating in an improper zoning district.

According to McCarthy, zoning in the area where Angel’s Care is located allows manufacturing, warehousing, commercial storage, wholesale distribution warehouses, incidental retail (typically defined as 10 percent of floor area) for goods associated with the primary allowed use, laboratories and research offices, processing and packaging, with conditionally permitted uses including retail commercial and services such as restaurants, cocktail lounges and live entertainment, outdoor storage and kennels.
