Chargers Girls Basketball Continues Undefeated Streak; Opens League With Two Wins. The Chargers (12-0, 2-0 league) opened their SCVAL Division slate by defeating Mountain View 57-38 on January 3 and Gunn 58-50 on January 6. Sophomore Joeseta Fatuesi led the Chargers with 27 points in the first win, with Senior Trina Cook adding 12 points and Sophomore Shania Ratliff adding nine. Fatuesi led the Chargers with 25 points in the win over Gunn, with Cook adding 13, Sophomore Caitlin Brown and Ratliff both adding seven.
Bruins Girls Basketball Continues Excellent Season With First League Win. The Bruins (8-4, 1-0 league) opened their league schedule with a 50-40 win over Cupertino on January 6 in an evening where the Bruins celebrated their newly remodeled gymnasium. Sophomore Mickie Ferrer led the Bruins with 17 points, with Senior Michaela Aguilar adding 12. Seniors Jessi Boyd and Christina Mendoza each added six points.
Santa Clara University Women’s Basketball Wins One, Loses One. The Broncos picked up a home 78-63 win against University of Portland, but fell four days later 58-41 to University of San Diego. Senior Alyssa Shoji scored 19 points (15 of which were 3-pointers) and broke the Santa Clara University all-time school record for threes made in the win over Portland. Junior Meagan Fulps had 18 points and redshirt junior Lindsay Leo had 16 points and a career-high 17 rebounds. In the loss to San Diego, junior Ashley Armstrong picked up a team-high 13 points and sophomore Ricki Radanovich finished with 11. The women will next play at Pepperdine University before returning home on Thursday, January 19 at 7 p.m. for Wear Purple for Alzheimer’s Awareness night against Gonzaga University.
Wilcox Boys Basketball Falls in Division Opener. The Chargers (6-7, 0-1) opened their league schedule on January 4 with a 56-53 loss to Los Altos. Junior Turituri led the Chargers with 16 points with Senior Jalen Narcisso adding eight points and Senior Derek Martinez adding seven.
Santa Clara University Men’s Basketball Loses Two. The Broncos lost 84-74 to University of Portland January 5 and 82-60 to Gonzaga on January 7. Junior Niyi Harrison tied his 19-point career high in the loss to Portland and junior Kevin Foster added his 300th career three pointer (Foster scored 12 points total). As a team, SCU shot 38.5% from the field, 35.3% from three-point range, and 69.2% from the free throw line. They also collected 27 rebounds, 11 assists, nine steals and two blocks. Two days later, the team was in Spokane, Washington where junior Raymond Cowels III was the top-scoring Bronco with 13 points. As a team, SCU shot 38.3% and collected 26 rebounds, 13 assists, six steals and three blocks. They also had 11 turnovers. The men next play University of San Diego at home on Thursday. Tip off is at 7 p.m.
Bruins Girls Soccer Opens League Slate With First Win of Season Over Cross-Town Rival Wilcox. The Bruins (1-4-1, 1-0 league) defeated Wilcox 7-0 at Wilcox on January 6. Junior Rachel Comstock and Sophomore Keira Frederito led the Bruins with two goals each. Sophomore Samia Adam, Senior Raquel DeJesus and Senior Alicia Terry adding a goal apiece, with Adam, Senior Sara Gonzales, Comstock and Terry each recording an assist. The Chargers are now 5-4-1, 0-2 league.
Bruins Boys Soccer Opens League Slate With Win Over Cross-Town Rival Wilcox. The Bruins (4-3-2, 1-0 league) defeated the Chargers (4-3, 0-2 league) 4-0 on January 6. Hamzat led the Bruins with a goal and two assists with Bermudes, Bustamante and Torres each adding a goal.
Bruins Wrestler Horta Claims Silver in Gary Bianchini Memorial Tournament. Senior Miguel Horta claimed second in the 138-pound weight class at the Gary Bianchini Memorial Tournament on January 7.
