Bruins Girls Basketball Loses Two League Games. The Bruins (8-7, 1-2) were defeated in overtime 61-53 by Monta Vista on Friday, January 13. Sophomore Mickie Ferrer scored 26 points, senior Jessi Boyd 14 points and senior Dedra Skinner nine points in the defeat. The Bruins were also defeated 41-29 by Saratoga on Tuesday, January 10. Boyd and sophomore Samantha Rudd scored eight points each in the loss to Saratoga.
Wilcox Girls Basketball Continues Stellar Season. The Lady Chargers (13-0, 4-0) continued their perfect season, defeating Palo Alto 54-51 on Friday, January 13. Sophomore Joeseta Fatuesi scored 20 points with junior Amanda Joo adding nine and senior Trinda Cook adding eight.
Santa Clara University Women’s Basketball Loses by 10. The Broncos traveled to Pepperdine University on Saturday, January 14 and came up short in a 67-57 loss to the Waves. Freshman Nici Gilday matched a career-high 15 points off the bench for SCU. Santa Clara’s 57 points was well below its season-average of almost 72 points per game. The Broncos return home Thursday, January 19 to play Gonzaga University at 7 p.m. The team will be having a Wear Purple for Alzheimer’s Awareness event.
Bruins Boys Basketball Splits League Games. The Bruins (11-3, 1-2) picked up their first league victory on Thursday, January 12, in a 62-51 triumph over Monta Vista. Sophomore Ronaq Virdi scored 15 points, junior Tayyab Kahn 13, junior R.J. Pamintuan 10 and senior Brandon Ngo added eight. The Bruins were defeated 60-55 at Saratoga on Wednesday, January 11. Sophomore Cole Lockwood scored 12 points, Pamintuan 11, Khan nine and Ngo added eight.
Santa Clara University Men’s Basketball Drops Two. The Broncos lost a home game 75-62 to University of San Diego on Thursday, January 12 and lost a road match up 95-78 to Brigham Young University on Saturday, January 14. Against USD, the team was led by sophomore Evan Roquemore’s 16 points followed by junior Kevin Foster’s 13. SCU shot 27.6 percent from the field and collected 40 rebounds, 10 assists, seven steals and two blocks. They also turned the ball over 14 times. Against BYU, Foster scored 22 points and passed John Bryant for the number six spot SCU’s all-time list. Junior Niyi Harrison added 18 points, which was among one of his career best outings. The Broncos shot 46.6 percent from the field and collected 26 rebounds, 15 assists, two blocks and four steals. They turned the ball over 11 times. The Broncos return home this Monday, January 23, to play Loyola Marymount at 7 p.m.
Bruins Boys Soccer Wins First League Game. The Bruins (5-3-1, 1-1-1) defeated Cupertino 9-0 in Cupertino on Wednesday, January 11. Hamzat scored three goals while Torres scored two, and Niz, Polini and Bermudez each scored one goal apiece. Bermudez compiled four assists. Hamzat also added an assist.
