Wilcox Lady Chargers Continue Flawless Season. The Wilcox Girls Basketball team (15-0, 5-0 league) continued their perfect season with a 51-33 victory over Milpitas on January 20. Sophomore Joeseta Fatuesi led the Chargers with 20 points, with sophomore Caitlin Brown adding 12 points.
Santa Clara Bruins Girls Basketball Falters With Two League Losses. The Bruins (8-8, 1-4) were defeated by Fremont 53-28 on January 18, then bested by Homestead 51-39 on January 20. Sophomore Samantha Rudd compiled 20 points, sophomore Mickie Ferrer 14 and senior Jessi Boyd 11 points in the two games.
The Lady Bruins are hosting a Breast Cancer Awareness night on February 7, with games at 5:30 and 7 p.m. against Fremont. The team is selling T-shirts with the proceeds benefiting Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Any leftover T-Shirts by game time will be sold for $10, and the team will also collect donations at the door.
Santa Clara University Women’s Basketball Suffers Two Losses. At Wear PURPLE for Alzheimer’s Awareness night on January 19 the Broncos fell to Gonzaga 81-68 and two days later, Loyola Marymount beat the Broncos 64-54. Senior Alyssa Shoji passed former teammate Lena Gipson for seventh place on SCU’s all-time scoring list with her 17 points and five threes against Gonzaga. Against LMU, redshirt junior Lindsay Leo picked up 23 points and three blocks while teammate, sophomore Ricki Radanovich ended the day with three threes and 15 points. The Broncos next play at Saint Mary’s on January 26.
Wilcox Boys Basketball Splits League Games. The Wilcox Chargers (8-9, 2-3 league) split a pair of league games, defeating Monta Vista 47-33 on January 18 then falling 49-36 to Fremont on January 20. Leading the Chargers against Monta Vista was senior Jalen Narciso with 11 points. R. Singh led the Chargers against Fremont with nine points. Narciso, senior Fred Nilsson and Charles each added seven points.
Santa Clara Bruins Boys Basketball Wins Two League Games. The Santa Clara Bruins (13-3, 3-2) defeated Fremont 57-47 on January 18, and defeated Lynbrook 60-42 on January 20. Sophomore Ronaq Virdi compiled 25 points, senior Brandon Loredo 22 points, sophomore Cole Lockwood 19 and junior Tayyab Khan 15 points in the two games.
Santa Clara University Men’s Basketball Loses Two. On January 21, the Broncos lost 86-74 to Santa Mary’s and on January 23 SCU picked up its seventh straight loss when Loyola Marymount defeated Santa Clara 74-63. Against LMU, junior Kevin Foster picked up 22 points to move into the number 4 spot on the SCU all-time career points list. Junior Niyi Harrison added a career-high 23 points and nine rebounds in the loss. As a whole, the team shot 42.2 percent and collected 38 rebounds, 13 assists, two steals and seven blocks. In the loss to LMU, sophomore Evan Roquemore led the team with 17 points. The team shot 35.7 percent and collected 33 rebounds, 10 assists, seven blocks and seven steals. The Broncos next play University of San Francisco at home on Thursday. Tip off is at 7 p.m.
Santa Clara Bruins Boys Soccer Picks Up League Win. The Bruins (6-4-3, 3-1-1) lead the SCVAL El Camino division after defeating Monta Vista 2-0 on January 20. Hamzat and Polini each scored a goal, with Bermudes and Perez each getting an assist.
Santa Clara University Men’s Tennis Opens Season with Wins. SCU picked up 7-0 victories against UC Santa Cruz and UC Davis on January 21. Against UCSC, Sophomore John Lamble defeated Devin Nerenberg 6-0, 7-5 and senior Nico Vinel bested Eric Koening in straight sets. Freshman Ilya Osintsev picked up his first collegiate win with scores of 6-0 and 6-2. All three Broncos doubles teams won their matches 8-6. Against UCD, senior Kyle Dandan picked up a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Toki Sherbakov. All but one Broncos doubles team won their matches. SCU will play against Boise State at the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Palo Alto on January 28.
Santa Clara University Women’s Water Polo Opens Season with Four Losses, One Win. The Broncos opened the season with a 9-4 loss to UC Santa Barbara followed by a 12-11 victory over Fraser Valley (Canada), and three consecutive losses - 16-6 to Cal, 16-6 to UC Davis and 10-9 to University of the Pacific. Against USCB goals were scored by sophomore Jenny Anderson (2), senior Marina Allen and freshman Alexandria Cabral. SCU’s only win, in the exhibition to Fraser Valley, saw goals by Allen (4), Anderson (3), junior Alison Norris (2), freshman Ashleigh Bandimere, junior Makena Pezzuto and sophomore Claire Eadington. In the loss to Cal, goals were scored by Bandimere (2), Allen, sophomore Morgan Fornesi, senior Laura Espinosa and junior Jamie Swartz. In the final loss of the weekend, goals were scored by Allen (2), Eadington, Anderson, Espinosa, Bandimere and senior Sarah Safir. SCU will play at the USCB Winter Invitational in Santa Barbara January 28-29.
K1 Speed Santa Clara Hosts First Round of Challenge GP Series. With the track in reverse layout, Nelson Rosa set the mark early, posting a 21.924 lap in qualifying races. Rosa claimed the victory followed by Eric Brockway holding onto second and Robert Nieves closing out the top three in third. Round 2 of the GP race series in February 19.
