Silicon Valley BBQ Continues Growing

The tantalizing aroma of smoked brisket, pulled pork and the related BBQ fixings enveloped the Mission City on June 26-27 during the Fourth Annual Silicon Valley BBQ Championships hosted by the Rotary Club of Santa Clara.

Continuing as the can’t-miss summer event in Santa Clara, the event boasted fun and activities for everyone. The Kid’s Zone provided kids an opportunity to drive cars, fly airplanes, rush down a giant slide, ride a train around the Central Park Ponds and bounce around in giant bounce houses.

In addition to an array of food concoctions to dine on, and a myriad of spirited beverages being poured, live entertainment delighted attendees throughout the event, with a lineup featuring amazingly talented musicians: The Houserockers (sponsored by the City of Santa Clara Cultural Commission), The Garage Band, The Cocktail Monkeys, Toree McGee with Rodeo House, Long Train Runnin’ and The Peelers.

Adding another element to the event, over 50 arts & crafts vendors took part in this year’s event, with everything from framed paintings, clothing, food products, BBQ accessories, home improvement products and more.

This year’s event also featured another first for the event, a BBQ Bistro where sponsors and VIP guests were treated to BBQ, libations and other amenities, including shaded tables. The Beer and Wine Garden was amplified a notch for this year’s event, with a 60-foot bar added, all under a large shaded canopy.

The second-largest Kansas City BBQ Society (http://www.kcbs.us/) event on the West Coast attracted 49 professional teams; all vying for over $15,000 in cash prizes, trophies, bragging rights and pride. In addition, the event is a points-earning competition for the regional and national championship tour. With unorthodox and creative team names rivaling the greatest of professional wrestling names, BBQ teams such as Bowling Over Pigs, 2 Rolling Bones, Bad S BBQ, Chicken Butt BBQ, Flame Thrower BBQ, Hog Eat Hog BBQ, Lord of the Ribs, Pig Pimp'n BBQ, Pirates of the Pig, Pork Daddy's BBQ, Rhythm 'n QUE and Smoke Slayers the competition is fierce and intense.

KCBS is a nonprofit organization “dedicated to promoting and enjoying barbeque, is the world's largest organization of barbeque and grilling enthusiasts with over 19,000 members worldwide.” KCBS sanctions over 450-barbeque contests worldwide.
