Fire Station No. 4 Grand Opening
By Robert Haugh
In keeping up with the growing needs of core neighborhood services and keeping pace with modern technologies, The City of Santa Clara recently celebrated yet another milestone in active community development, opening the newly revamped Fire Station No. 4 on Pruneridge Avenue.
Finished on-time and under budget, the project was completed with $50,000 to spare.
The 5,611 square-foot facility features an array of modern amenities and sophisticated technology required for operating a high-quality and successful fire station.
“We’ve tried to keep our fire department at pace to keep up with technology and the growing needs of the community,” said Mayor Patricia Mahan at the grand opening ceremony. “We hope that the new Fire Station 4 helps you even more in your mission.”
Amenities include a Captain’s office, a kitchen with stainless steel countertops, living room, six dorms featuring 12 beds, restrooms with showers, an apparatus bay (for fire engine and related maintenance), an exercise room, shop area, storage areas and more.
In addition to modern amenities for the firefighters and modern technology, allowing firefighters to more quickly respond to emergencies, the station features several photovoltaic, green-friendly cells on the roof, providing ample clean electricity, becoming one of the most innovative fire stations in the West Coast. Fishing for Fun at City Hall
Santa Clara’s Civic Center Plaza is the host to the workings of our City government. City Hall and the City Council Chambers are two of the more prominent features. The reflecting pool and fountain adorns the plaza, yet many people walk past it without giving it much of a glance or reflecting on its presence. The sound of the water provides a calming influence on the area, but on Saturday morning, the reflecting pool took on a completely different meaning and purpose.
As early as 6:05 a.m., people were lining up for their chance to get to the reflecting pool. But not for a chance to reflect or enjoy the pool for the idyllic feelings it evokes. Excitement and anticipation could be felt in the air as the crowd grew. Children ranging in age from 3 to 11 were getting out of bed extra early – earlier than some cartoons even – for the chance to try their hand at fishing at the Annual Fishing Derby. See Islamic Art at Muslim Community Association
Question: What's the best-known example of Islamic art and architecture in the world?
If you answered the Taj Mahal in India, you're right. If you didn't, think about joining the Muslim Community Association on Sunday May 11 for a presentation on Islamic art and architecture.
A continuous tradition reaching back to the 7th century, Islamic art draws on many sources -- Roman, Early Christian, Byzantine, pre-Islamic Persian, Central Asian and Chinese. It isn't art that pertains to religion in the same way that "Christian art" refers to art works with specifically Christian themes.
Instead, Islamic art is characterized by its use of a specific artistic "vocabulary" of complex and interconnected geometric, arabesque, floral, and calligraphic forms – all of which ultimately reflect the eternal unity, balance and beauty of God and all creation. Click Here for Complete Story
