Due to CEQA (California Environmental Quality Act) restrictions... Click Here for Complete Story

Downtown: Why There’s No There, There
With the success of the historic areas like Campbell’s downtown strip and the “faux” downtown of Santana Row, many regret that Santa Clara has no similar draw. Click Here for Complete Story
Putting the "There" Back: Downtown Revitalization
The idea of "downtown" is an essential part of our sense of community. We're drawn to "downtown" – whether it's a true downtown like Palo Alto's University Avenue or a "Main Street, Disneyland" like Santana Row. Click Here for Complete Story

Downtown Redevelopment Plan on Hold
A plan to restore an urban center to Santa Clara will stay on hold at least until mid-summer as potential developers wait for the uncertain credit and real estate markets to stabilize.
One of the two companies invited to bid on the project declined to participate. The other, while remaining enthusiastic, says that current economic conditions make it impossible at this time to develop accurate financial projections for the projects by the RFP deadline. These projections are necessary for construction loans as well as providing the project's budget. Click Here for Complete Story

Sk8ter Girl On a Roll at Santa Clara Skate Park
By Carolyn Schuk
If you had to describe Nicole West in two words, they would be "free spirit." The athletic ninth grader is always ready to try something new, and she wants to do it her own way.
But what makes this slender girl with the friendly, open smile unique is that she's a skateboarder, one of the few girls in a heavily male sport.
West has played other sports including track and basketball – "anything that's fun," she says. But skating is her passion. Her middle school graduation present was skateboarding equipment – Spitfire wheels, Tensor trucks (axles) and Bones bearings.
Skateboarding is a perfect match with West's independent style. "It's not like any other sport. You can put it together in any way that reflects your style."
West describes herself as a "street skater" – taking the paved, urban terrain as its challenge rather than the bowls and ramps of "vert" skateboarding. Click Here for Complete Story

When scientist-turned building contractor Dave Edwards talks about changing his career and lifestyle for greener pastures, he means business.

After three years of discussion on how to best absorb a rising tide of students from new residential developments, the school board of Santa Clara Unified School District met June 26th to discuss implementing a Mello-Roos tax increase. The vote was postponed to July 24th for further negotiation with developers and municipal governments. “I’m angry about this situation,” said... Click Here for Complete Story

It Came From Intel
If you were reading news about Intel last week, you'd just as likely be reading it in the entertainment or medical news as in the technology news.

Thrift Store Chic in Santa Clara
Where can you find a pair of almost-new Via Spiga shoes for less than $5? Or an Italian sports coat for a few dollars more? Thrift store retail is the local bargain hunter’s secret to staying fashionable without breaking the bank.

Usual Suspects Rip Up Central Park Stage with Classic Rock
I’ve seen bigger audiences turn out for the Concerts in the Park, though I’ve never heard them raise such a ruckus until last Sunday. That’s when the Usual Suspects took to the stage with their raucous interpretation of raucous 70s rock and roll.
Throughout the entire 90-minute show, the five-member band, led by vocalist Dave Muhoberac, elicited whistles and hoots from the barefoot, sundress-wearin’ and body-swayin’ crowd.
Muhoberac, who was discovered in a karaoke bar, seemed to have just as much fun when he slid across the stage, Angus Young-style. Click Here for Complete Story

City Council Roundup
Santa Clara City Council Meeting, July 8, 2008
Roll Call
All Council Members were present, although Council Member Kolstad arrived late as he was out of town on City-related business.
Continuances/Exceptions
The public hearing for the rezoning application for 1575 Pomeroy Avenue was rescheduled to the August 26 Council meeting.
Eddie Souza, the owner of the property at 1525 Pomeroy Avenue, addressed the Council and stated neither he, his mother nor his neighbors had received any notice of the continuance of the public hearing. He also questioned the way the City Planning Department notifies people and handles other issues and questioned the professionalism and ethics of the department. City Manager Jennifer Sparacino stated she would follow through on Mr. Souza’s comments and would look into the notification issues and give a report to the Council. Click Here for Complete Story
