MetroFi Wireless Update
by Larry Sacks

The City of Santa Clara Electric Utility will be taking over support of the MetroFi Free Wireless network.  The Electric Utility had already planned to use the wireless network to support its implementation of the remote meter reading project.  In addition to this, the Electric Utility will also be taking on the task of supporting and possibly expanding the free wireless network.  “We understand the importance of the free wireless network to the residents of Santa Clara” stated  Larry Owens, Electric Utility Division Manager.

To help support the network and build it out to enhance service in weak reception areas, the Electric Utility has contracted with 180 Connect to conduct a Signal Strength Study.  The study will involve spot checking several network locations for radio mounting, “performing a signal test and a software propagation analysis” to identify the strength and weaknesses of the wireless network signals necessary to bolster and or upgrade equipment in weak spots.

Free Wireless Continues
The net effect is the City of Santa Clara is taking over support of the free wireless network.  That means no more advertisements downloaded while attempting to view a webpage.  The City is also doing away with the need to login or launch MSN and support is being extended to users besides Microsoft Windows XP or Vista.

Support?
Initially at least, the wireless network will be supported and maintained by SkyPilot, the manufacturer of the wireless hardware.  For system and connection support issues,
email SkyPilot at scnetinfo@skypilot.com.
