Based on the popular HBO TV series Sex and the City makes it to the big screen 10 years after the series premier and 4 years after it ceased production. The time line moves the story forward 3 years and covers about 1 year in the lives of the main characters. I know all this from doing a little research, as I don’t remember seeing more than a half dozen actual episodes over the show’s run.
Back are the 4 main characters, their husbands and boyfriends. The movie runs a staggering 2 hours and 28 minutes so you get the idea you are seeing the entire year flow by in actual time. Other than that it’s not bad as soap opera/comedies go.
Everyone is still attractive but all look quite a bit older seemingly overnight. This is what a gap between TV and movies can do. Harrison Ford in the latest Indiana Jones movie is a good example of the “age shock” which takes place before our very eyes. Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon all reprise their roles as the Bowery Girls. Chris Noth is on hand as Mr. Big. Candace Bergen puts in a small cameo. Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson joins the film at the 70-minute mark and adds a big plus to the story.
Babies are born. Cocktails and wine are consumed in great quantities. A little sex and nudity but not too much are on hand. Kim C. steals the show. Lots of mid life crisis and aging themes are trotted out to make us think we are watching a serious movie. All in all the film looks lush and is fun to follow. Not a lot of laughs and a little heavy on the “we’ve broken up” angst.
Like the 3 ladies/fans in my row I bawled like a baby at the end. Last time I cried like this in the movies was when Ned Beatty was physically abused by Bill McKinney in Deliverance (1972). Wow, that had to hurt.
Rated 2.9 out of 4 reasons to wait for the DVD with all the extra features.
