Headlines from Santa Clara newspapers of 100 years ago and 50 years ago
 
On Tuesday, July 28, 1908, The Santa Clara News reported:
  • Funeral of M. Vargas - Impressive Tribute Paid to Memory of Trustee: Memorable tributes to late Town Trustee Manual Vargas, untimely death leaves void in hearts of Santa Clara citizens.
  • Native Daughters Parlor to be Organzied:  Santa Clara to organize Native Daughters Parlor.  The Santa Clara chapter of the men’s division, Native Sons of the Golden West, will assist ladies in setting up their organization.
  • Death Lurks in Alviso Slough: Indignation over frightful death swamp at Alviso – Dumbarton Land Company must do something to abate this nuisance of poisonous gases and dreadful odors.
 
On Thursday, July 24, 1958, The Santa Clara Journal reported:
  • City Boundary Settlement Close: Lenghty Discussions with Sunnyvale Point to Solution: Boundary dispute between Santa Clara and Sunnyvale to be resolved by giving Santa Clara 195 acres on the north side of Kifer road and Sunnyvale 158 acres opposite the General Motors plant on the west side of Lawrence Road.  Greenvale Manor tract will revert back to the county.
  • Sports Illustrated does feature about Von Saltza:  Last Friday, Santa Clara girl Chris von Saltza had her picture placed on the front page of ‘Sports Illustrated’ – the magazine named her ‘the number one US swimmer, at the age of 14.
  • 2 SC Priests Celebrate Golden, Diamond Jubilees: Father Deeney, Father Watson have Total of 110 Years of Work in Jesuit Order: Two kindly University of Santa Clara priests honored, Rev. Cornelius F. Deeney, S.J. on occasion of his 60th year in order and Rev. Ernest P. Watson, S.J. on his 50th year. Father Deeney has been on Santa Clara faculty since 1921.
  • Summer Fun in Santa Clara: What’s a school child or teen to do during the long days of no school and idle hours?  Suggestions with photos – square dancing, baseball clinic, chess, enter 6th annual pet parade, go swimming at War Memorial Swimming Pool, enroll in City park department’s summer camp, or horse around at a city playground.  Children under 5 must be accompanied by a parent on the playgrounds.
