Headlines from Santa Clara newspapers of 100 years ago and 50 years ago
 
On Tuesday, August 18, 1908, The Santa Clara News reported:
  • Santa Clara to be Heart of Live Network of Electric Lines: With the purchase of the Santa Clara County Interurban Railroad, the Southern Pacific has gained control of all the lines running down the peninsula. Santa Clara is to have a more complete interurban service than any other city of its size in California as it will be near the very heart of the great gridiron of electric roads. The present line will continue west on Franklin street, and out on the San Francisco Road.
  • New Residence Section to  Be Opened for Local Mill Employees: The Bray subdivision, south of the Pacific Manufacturing Company’s property will soon to sold to a San Francisco capitalist who will build up the tract with handsome residences for mill employees.
 
On Thursday, August 14, 1958, the Santa Clara Journal reported:
  • Franklin St. Parking Law Revolt: 21 Merchants Sign Petition: Decry Loss of Parking Space to Bus Station: Merchants on 900 block of Franklin St. have seen a long strip of curbing painted red to be reserved for incoming Greyhound buses—five other parking spaces eliminated. Saloon keeper and former mayor Jimmy Bacigalupi leading protest of merchants seeking relief.
  • Rev. Donohoe New President of Santa Clara Univ.: Rev. Patrick A. Donohoe, S.J. will take over the reins as 24th president of the University. He had been serving as Western States regional director of Jesuit education. He takes over from the Rev. Herman J. Hauck who has been president since 1951. The change is in line with Jesuit policy which sets 6 years as the maximum period of service in administrative office.
