Headlines from Santa Clara newspapers of 100 years ago and 50 years ago
On Tuesday, August 18, 1908, The Santa Clara News reported:
- C.M. Kimberlin New Trustee: Seed man, Charles Kimberlin is only candidate to replace the late Manual Vargas on the Town Board of Trustees.
- Impressive Funeral of Our Esteemed Citizen J.A. Shoemaker: Tributes for this aged pioneer. He had moved to Santa Clara in 1868 and held the office of Town Marshall for two terms, had also served as County Roadmaster.
On Thursday, August 14, 1958, the Santa Clara Journal reported:
- Big Shopping Center Slated for Santa Clara within Year: The property on El Camino Real in front of the Moonlight Drive-In Theater will be occupied by a huge shopping center this time next year. This 15 acre site lies on the south side of El Camino Real between Kiely blvd. and Saratoga creek.
- Jefferson School Bond Vote Oct. 7: $1,000,000 Needed for Expansion; $1 ½ Million State Loan Okehed: Santa Clara’s Jefferson School district is seeking more bond money for additional expansion of the rapidly growing district. Money is needed to acquire sites for new schools and to add new classrooms to Bennett school on Lawrence Station Road and Curtis school on Pomeroy Ave.
